Observing my fellow train passengers recently, I realised every one of them was interacting with a mobile phone. Not so long ago, we’d have all been reading a newspaper or a favourite Penguin paperback. We now have the technology to power our homes with clean energy (p.9) or to get across town on an eco-bike (p.31). Reaching Net Zero within the next few years feels challenging. Still, with political will, combined with human ingenuity, it doesn’t seem impossible.
The popularity of the mobile shows just how quickly new technology can become part of our everyday lives. Within the next decade or so, will renewable energy, breathing cleaner air and paying less for our utility bills seem equally commonplace? I do hope so.
