August / September 2024

Are you old enough to remember the ‘summer of 76’, the hottest summer in the 20th century? From June to August the sun shone 14 hours a day, reservoirs ran dry, and forests ignited. Higher temperatures have been recorded since in the UK, notably the summer of 22, with thermometers exceeding 40°C in places. All very different from this summer, the wettest and coolest since the Titanic disaster in 1912. So, what’s going on? Aren’t we supposed to be expecting increasingly hot summers as part of climate change? According to the Met Office, climate change is also contributing to the heavy rain fall we’ve been experiencing. The UK weather, never predictable has become even less predictable! The good news is that emissions are slowly coming down in the UK, so let’s keep going… and the weather is meant to perk up for the rest of the summer.
