Cece’s Corner Book Recommendations

I have been focusing my attention on books about mental wellness from a woman’s perspective. The first is KC Davis’ How to Keep House While Drowning. This book is a must for anyone feeling burdened by the daily tasks of living and the toll they take on the body and mind. Davis’ writing encourages kindness and softness, with chapters such as “when it’s hard to take a shower” and “good enough is perfect”.

How To Keep House While DrowningI regularly return to How to Keep House…  for strategies to aid me in the fight against ‘life admin’ with gentle self-compassion. This book offers tips for everyone but especially for those of us with messy lives, big families or long-term battles with mental health.

There's No Such Thing As An Easy JobMy second book is There’s No Such Thing as an Easy Job by Kikuko Tsumura. This quirky novel follows a young woman struggling with alienation in suburban Japan. Tsumura’s writing is quirky and conveys relatable experiences of sexism, loneliness and the realities of being a single woman in modern times.

Local Recommendations

This month I’ve been treating myself to some retail therapy on Albert Road. For me the highlight was in Herbies where I bought an old faithful of mine: Faith in Nature’s grapefruit scented body wash. Herbies has been proving health and sustainable products for nearly 50 years. With high protein snacks and eco-friendly household items, there’s something for everyone at Herbies.

I also popped in on Southsea Soundz. I could have happily bought up about half of their ‘good soul’ section but settled on a single by The Gap Band to brighten my weekend.

My final recommendation for this issue is Artabelle. Vintage furniture has always appealed to me. We leave a mark on what we fill our homes with. Vintage furniture allows a chance to inherit their memories. Artabelle certainly fits that brief with its wide range stylish pieces ready to be re-homed.
