The WorldMusic Village @ Victorious Festival Portsmouth

The popular World Music Village curated by the charity Arms Around the Child at Victorious Festival is serving up a real treat this year. Get ready for a feast of contemporary, vibrant and exciting acts from around the world.

Saturday is an explosion of sounds and styles with a return of crowd favorite and chart-topping sensation Natty flying in from Jamaica returning to the WMV with his Reggae roots band, socially conscious lyrics and Soulful summer vibes. He will be joined on bill by Malphino serving up a mix of cumbia rhythms & tropical sounds that form an idyllic backdrop to their mystical world. Saturday also sees K.O.G. Sound System Hailing from Ghana brings his Afro fusion with funk reggae and jazz to the stage. Keeping with the Ghana vibes the great vocalist Florence Adooni will be joining us with her band who have been in the UK for the summer festival season. The Great Malarkey will be providing additional raucous energy with their gypsy, punk, funk ensemble! The day is topped off with Tash Hills bringing her original funk grooves to the village, get ready to dance all day long.

Sunday kicks off with a vibrant African dance workshop and Meet My Ancestors bring their traditional marimba sounds and dance moves from Zimbabwe. Keeping on the East coast of Africa Linos Wengara & Zimbaremabwe Mbira Vibesshow their fusion of traditional and electronic styles. Recently exploding onto the scene with Bobby Friction (BBC radio DJ actor & artist) are The Bhangra All Stars featuring Bee2. Juanita Euka performs on the World Music Village stage playing a delectable blend of Congolese guitar music, rumba, afrobeat, tango, cumbia, salsa and pop. Additional party vibes on Sunday eve come from Mellowmatic and The Gyratory All Stars playing original and classics from Hip Hop, Funk, Jazz, and Soul.

Elsewhere on the newly revealed bill are Atlantico, UK based exponents of rootsy Colombia influenced Cumbia music, Reggae band Emz All Stars. Joining the line up over the weekend Gloria Miller, Avije, Tuto Tribe, Ticklin’The Pickle, El Salvador and Chinese dancers. Teaching you the Latin dance moves on Saturday lunchtime is the Salsa Solentworkshop and don’t miss local African Choir Africapella who will be performing a pop-up at the Common Stage entrance to The World Music Village.

The World Music Village has also partnered with sponsors BIMM and will present some of the budding and fresh young talent coming out of the school.

The World Music Village’s alternative hot spot The People’s Lounge has a number of musical gifts lined up for the weekend. TPL is a Cultural Collective of Artists, Musicians, Poets & DJ’s that celebrates Portsmouth’s diverse local talent. The People’s Kitchen also returns again after cooking and serving up a feast last year. On offer will be delicious Vegan curries, cold and hot refreshments, and sweet delights to raise money for AATC.

Friday in The People’s Lounge hosts an exciting billing of fresh young bands and artists. all bring their interesting contemporary sounds from Neo-Soul to Hip-Hop, Folk to R&B. In the evening check out some of Portsmouth’s finest upcoming talent from the Hip-Hop, RnB, Rap and Afrobeat scenes as WRS, Portsmouth Radar & Word of Mouthprepare to take over the Lounge on a special night for Portsmouth’s bubbling Urban Music Movement.

Saturday is one for the Funk, Soul and dance floor divas, hosting emerging bands as well as some People’s Lounge veterans including Amba Tremain, Grooveline with Knats providing a new Jazz sound before Slick Minded individuals close the night.

On Sunday TPL takes a more mellow turn with some high-quality Jazz / Funk, performances, a day to tune in, listen, groove and be transported. Bringing their grooves to the Lounge are Southsea Groove Collective, Side Eye and Irrelevant Elephant. Pompey’s own Nothing Ventured Vinyl will close the lounge for 2024
